YEAH!! for focusing on student artists and arts education in local papers/media! Some questions/approaches.

1) "Best in Prep" typically focuses on individuals, and the arts (in schools and most after-school arts orgs) are more often focused on the cast, show, ensemble with the exception of visual art.  If you are focusing on individual student artists, you'll need to think about how to separate the work of the artist vs. the work of the program as a whole.

2) "Best" in sports is defined by wins and losses, but how is "best" defined in the arts? If you are awarding a school, is it the school with the greatest participation in the arts? Is it the school that gets the most awards (winning competitions, etc)? Is it the school that beats the odds?

3)  If you are awarding individual students, think (a lot) about who can nominate a student. As someone who works with students, teachers and parents year round, this will be critical. Parents have become much more involved in advocating for their child. That can be a challenge in some instances.

Mary

Good Morning!

Our local paper has been holding a “Best of the Preps” event for Sports each year. They are interested in partnering with us (arts council/arts funding agency) and the school system to host a county-wide “Best of the Preps” for the Arts. Most likely it will be an awards/showcase event next May.

Do you (or do you know of anyone) that present this type of event? We are hoping to glean some wisdom before diving into this project.

Thanks!

Rodney
