Hi all,

I hope this email finds you well. As we try to spread the news, we also must be cognizant of not acting in place of the grant officers at the U.S. Department of Education. They have multiple staff who can address your questions with specificity and authority. Please check out the below website for how to get in touch with them.

Mr Poulin:

Would you describe for me more clearly to whom this would apply and what agency should be the applicant? I am a dance educator in an arts school in Osceola County Florida. Our District has some very proactive platforms for Arts Education and we have many ideas for implementation of learning strategies that are more specific to our school but we would love, as an Arts Faculty to develop materials, programs and protocols that would enhance our district and generate flagship data that supports Arts Education Advocacy. What part of our District would be the applicant agency? The Superintendent's office, the District Arts Coordinator office or the Professional Learning Communities? I am sorry to be so ignorant to this grant but I do not want to let a great opportunity go by just because I am afraid to ask. I appreciate, in advance,  your guidance in educating me further on this. Thank you!!

New Federal Arts Education Grant Competition Announced

On May 1st, the U.S. Department of Education announced a new round of grants for the newly-named “Assistance for Arts Education Development & Dissemination” grant program. It was formerly called the Arts Education Model Development & Dissemination grant program.

This grant competition will focus on, “Projects that develop, disseminate, and integrate high-quality, effective arts-based instructional materials and educational programming, including online resources, in multiple arts disciplines that (1) increase access to standards-based arts education; (2) integrate standards-based arts education into other subjects as part of a well-rounded education; and (3) improve students' academic performance, including their knowledge and skills in creating, performing, and responding to the arts.”

In total, about $14 million will be awarded to 20-25 grantees, each receiving about $575,000 per year during their 4 year project cycle. The first deadline, for Letters of Intent to apply, is May 16th.

This grant competition is made possible through the Assistance to Arts Education program being provided funding by Congress in the U.S. Department of Education’s annual budget. In the FY 2018 Omnibus appropriations bill, the Arts Education program’s appropriations increased from $27 million to $29 million, which is an outcome of the grassroots advocacy (see Issue Brief) during national Arts Advocacy Day and throughout the year.

For further background and insight into this grant program, please take a look at ‘A Decade of Federal Arts in Education Funding: Trends, Analysis, and the Story Behind the First 10 Years’.
