Hi Lee,

As the Public Art Coordinator for the City of Aurora, CO I managed the selection process for the 7/20 Memorial (The Aurora Theatre Shooting) of behalf of the 7/20 Memorial Foundation.  Douwe Blumberg, of DeMossville, KY was selected for this project, and the members of the 7/20 Memorial Foundation, the community, and the city all embrace the resulting artwork. Douwe was wonderful to work with throughout the process and genuinely listened the thoughts, concerns, and goals of the Board Members.  169 artists applied for the project with a budget of $200,000 which was dedicated this past July.

Today there are so many different ideas about what a memorial can be.  Perhaps the biggest question is what are the goals for these memorials that you are working on?  Are you going to be looking for something traditional and formal, or are there different goals for these two projects?

Good luck!

Roberta

Dear Lee Monica,

I am an installation artist in New York who created a memorial for the 70th observance of the bombing of Dresden, Germany in World War II.

Dear Colleagues,

I have been tasked with assisting a selection committee in finding an artist or artist team to create two memorials here in north Florida (budget: over $400,000). My research has already resulted in a list of more than 100 possible artists but I would very much like to hear your recommendations as well. If you have experience with or would recommend artists who have created memorials, please send me their names and contact information.

Thank you!

Lee
