Lauren,
We have found that artists are not eligible for professional liability insurance since they are not licensed professionals. Therefore, our risk management team requires all artists under contract with the city to provide proof of general liability insurance throughout the length of their contract. Once the project is complete, the city becomes the owner of the project and as such is self insured.

Typically, general liability policies for artists run $600-$800 per year making the financial end feasible for most of the artists we work with.

I hope this helps-

Since any professional liability (errors and omissions) policy written to cover fine artists is likely to be junk (PL policies generally are written to cover people who are subject to license requirements), we have found that if PL is required by the city, the artist should partner with an engineer or architect and the artwork would be covered by their PL policy. Sometimes an artist can be considered part of a design team and covered under their PL policy.

Good morning, everyone,

We are looking into a different insurance structure where artists could possibly go through us for the professional and general liability insurance for public art projects. Do any of you have examples of a policy like this? We have found that the insurance requirements needed by the City of Memphis can be a real cost burden to artists over the life of a project, and wanting to make that a bit easier if possible.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you can send our way!
