Hi Suzanne,

I remember you and your fine Discovery Green public events fondly!   Wish I could see and participate in what you do.

I just opened a new installation at the Cypress College Art Gallery, with a motorized broom sculpture.

Hope all is well with you.

Helen, thanks for remembering Light as Air shown at Discovery Green,

Leslie, we have found that the park’s audience responds enthusiastically to inflatable works. In addition to Light as Air, we’ve presented:

  • Inflatable illuminated photographic spheres by the artist David Graeve suspended from live oak trees. David photographed the images, then worked with a commercial photographic print process, which was built into his time frame.
  • Exxopolis, an illuminarium created by the British collective Architects of Air, a labyrinth fantastical shapes viewed from the interior, where natural light is transformed into an interior environment of intense color. This group generally has a luminarium touring in the US each year.
  • moonGARDEN, an installation of 22 inflated, illuminated spheres by the Montreal-based collective Lucion, including 11 shadow theatres using custom shapes, and 3 interactive spheres. We worked with Lucion for approximately six months to determine the content of the shadow theaters.

Access to electricity is one factor in determining placement of inflatable works. We provide power from the source to the location of installation, and the artist or collective will connect the power to their equipment. If you have any specific questions, please let me know.

Susanne

Hi Leslie and PAN colleagues,

Big yes, in Houston in 2009.  Sara Kellner curated a terrific show for the civic space, Discovery Green.

It was a terrific show, and should have travelled:

An independent curator then, sarakellner.com, she is also Director of Civic Art at Houston Arts Alliance now.

Hello All!

Does anyone have experience with inflatable art? What artists are working in this area and what are the requirements (access to electricity, lead time from commission to installation, etc.) for this type of temporary artwork?

Thanks,

Leslie
