Hi Nick, and PAN colleagues,

There are several public sports arenas from before the public-private partnerships became the norm. My firsthand knowledge is from my Seattle public artist years.

In 1995 Washington State voters approved the establishment of a special government entity to develop a professional ball field for Seattle's Major League Baseball team. This led to Safeco Field, now T-Mobile Field, legally the 'Stadium Public Facilities District,' which is managed by the Seattle Public Facilities District. The history can be found at ballpark.org.

Seattle also sports Key Arena, a professional sports arena and home to the one-time Seattle Supersonics, in the Seattle Center, a entertainment district. When the pro team left, the public was stuck with the facility, which has seen repeated remodelling to attract new private business.  Per Wikipedia: KeyArena was the first publicly financed arena in the area to be fully supported by earned income from the building.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KeyArena

The City of Inglewood, CA is supporting the private development of a $5 billion professional sports stadium with several regulatory easements. No public dollars are being spent on the facility, just public policy.

Hi All,

We are working with a developer and city in Japan who want to set up a percent for art program for a sports stadium. They have asked if there are US stadiums that have a percent for art program. I know of several that have procured art through public-private partnerships, but I'm not sure about a percent for art program that sets aside a percent of budget or revenue towards art.

So, I thought I'd ask this group of public art professionals. Do any of you know of a program like this for stadiums, or have documentation that you could share on how other stadium's allocate budget for art?

Best,

Nick Anderson
