I am currently working a poetry engraving project here in Santa Cruz. The vendor I’m probably going to hire has proposed using a CNC router to etch the poetry
at 1/32" etching depth into the concrete then going back with a stained sealer in
the etched letters. We looked at stamping but it required more coordination with the general contractor and made doing longer poems difficult.
I’m actually meeting with the vendor at the end of this week to see how his machine works etc. His quote to do 32 (mostly short) poems was only $8,900 which
seemed shockingly low but hey, we won’t argue as long as we are sure he can actually do the project.
The concrete type is “Portland concrete” and I’m going to ask him to give me a sample etched into that type of concrete.
The poems were laid out in CAD by the design firm that is doing the trail/sidewalk design. I was able to give the vendor the CAD drawings so he could program
his CNC machine.
The other benefit of this approach is that we can shape the poems however we’d like. For example, one poem is going to be etched in a circular shape.
I’ll follow up directly with more info once I have met with the contractor.
