Hi Carrie,
Orange Lining by Buster Simpson and Peg Butler (copied
here) included 122 short phrases stamped into concrete on new sidewalks at various locations along 7.3 miles of the MAX Orange Line. Stamping concrete was especially challenging because the finished product had to meet city standard sidewalk requirements,
and achieving that standard requires a very skilled cement mason perform the work. As you might imagine, the project required extensive coordination. The actual stamping itself was not part of the commission budget, it was considered part of the infrastructure
cost.
A full-scale mock-ups were produced to make sure everyone was in agreement about the stamp depth and finish. The sample also provided an inspection standard.
Needless to say, there were a few locations where less experienced masons did the stamping and there was “rocking,” which resulted in an uneven surface - these had to be demolished and redone.
