Hi Beth

I did something like this when I worked at the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. We commissioned an artist team, Mobile Mural Lab, to paint murals on buildings at a public beach as a graffiti mitigation measure. The artists worked with established graffiti artists who had created successful careers doing graffiti art in sanctioned and commercial ways. The graffiti artists mentored kids to teach them how to find opportunities to do sanctioned graffiti art projects and the kids had to abide by doing no illegal tagging or graffiti while they were being mentored. This approach to the project was structured by Mobile Mural Lab.

I know that in Los Angeles there are gang prevention organizations who also teach young people to do murals instead of illegal tagging, but don’t know any by name.

This can be a successful way to create murals, if you have a respected graffiti artist teaching younger people how to get their work out there in a legal way then you end up with a well-executed mural that is not vandalized.

Subject: Programs that train vandals to make murals?

Does anyone have examples of programs that take graffiti artists and help them learn mural skills? Is this a collaboration with the PD or other non-profits? How are the artists identified? Success stories? Cautionary tales?
