Amanda,

Until recently I was on the board of our local community development corporation, which runs a music hop on a weekend in September every year—Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings in a different commercial district each night. Multiple musicians and businesses—including some that are not usually music venues—participate.

Prior to last year, a board member took responsibility for all the organizational details, and staff members had to divert their attention from their primary responsibilities to work on the hop in the weeks leading up to it. Last year, for the first time, an event manager was hired to do most of the work, and hiring her (as an independent contractor) turned out to be one of the best investments we had ever made as an organization. She has been brought back this year for both the hop and a big annual fundraiser that takes place a month or so before the hop.

I asked our executive director, Deanna Bremer Fisher, if it would be OK to refer you to her, and she said she would be happy to talk with you. She can be reached at  dbfisher@futureheights.org or 216-320-1423, and she can give you the details.

Subject: Contract Festival Manager--salary?

Hello!

We are planning a budget for a new 2-day chalk art festival that coincides with a growing marathon/race weekend in our city. We'd like to include a project manager/event coordinator as part of the budget but I have no idea where to start compensation-wise. Do any of your organizations run festivals with a dedicated event manager who is not already a part of your staff? If so, how do you plan the budget for that person? If you are willing to share their actual compensation range and general responsibilities that would be very helpful as well!

Thanks,
