It’s my understand that the fresher the pavement – the longer the paint will last, though we are new at this too! We just completed our first painting on asphalt in June.
It was a community project executed at an annual block party. Because of this, it was important to use to use a paint other than epoxy so that the drying time would be less and streets would be closed off for the least amount of time as possible. Also this
allows for the artist to touch up areas as it deteriorates if needed. We worked in coordination with our Streets Department so that it could be applied on fresh asphalt (a month old) and used H&C Colortop concrete stain from Sherwin Williams. The manufacturers
told is that it is common for asphalt murals and that depending on traffic will last 1-3 years.
This webpage has a video of the installation.
Hope this helps!
