i recently completed this sculptural work in collaboration with the washington state arts commission, for the hawkins middle school. it's titled "pinecone, cyclone, galaxy, totality."

the work is designed as a teaching tool to help students learn ratios and consider art, science, and math as interrelated subjects.

the budget was $35,000. and the material is stainless steel.

Hi Emily and Public Art Colleagues,

So many things are tied to math! You might want to narrow your focus.

That said, my project Mathematique Nouveau explored arithmetic embodied by a herd of sheep on a collective farm in France. I worked with the farmer to shear sheep with mathematical symbols. Led by the bellwether, flock dynamics performed equations of addition and subtraction, multiplication and division. My artist-initated work led to a film and still photography exhibition in Valence, France. Let me know if you want a link to the film.

CALL FOR ARTISTS

An Oklahoma Art in Public Places Project

Project: Sallisaw Veterans Center
Deadline: October 15, 2019

The Oklahoma Arts Council invites artists and artist teams to submit qualifications for the design and installation of artwork for an Oklahoma Art in Public Places project at the new Sallisaw Veterans Center. The Center is a 175-bed facility designed to provide daily care and treatment for Oklahoma's heroes in a home-like, family-friendly setting. The Center is a project of the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs.

Total artwork budget is $350,000 for all associated costs including, but not limited to, artist design fee, structural engineering, materials, fabrication, insurance, transportation, installation, building or site modifications, related travel, per diem, and other costs.

Areas of interest for public artwork include, but are not limited to: 1) a large outdoor sculpture located on the plaza at the entrance of the Center; 2) sculptures for placement in the resident garden spaces; and, 3) sculptures for placement on the walking trail.

Deadline to apply is October 15, 2019. Download the request for qualifications for a complete project description and details about the selection process. Visit the Oklahoma Art in Public Places page for more information.

Signed into law in 2004, the Oklahoma Art in Public Places Act reserves 1.5 percent of eligible state capital improvement project budgets for investment in public art that represents the history and values of Oklahoma. In managing the program, the Oklahoma Arts Council brings together state government entities, artists, and local citizens in the commissioning or acquisition of artwork reflecting individual communities.

Hi Carrie!

have you seen the project that Mel Chin did, Wake & Unmoored, in Times Square in 2018? It engaged both a physical sculpture and an augmented reality experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Psm1c6ACF9M He worked with Microsoft for this version, but I understand from a recent conversation that he is looking to work with someone to make the experience fully open source software for a re-sited version.
