Glenn,

I am also in to assist with the session “Embracing the Amateur, The Future to Art Worldwide”. This is an important topic and as a long time gallery owner and art consultant feel I could bring this angle to the topic.

Glenn,

Sounds like a great topic. I did not go to art school myself. About five years ago I rented a small studio. There were 23 other studios and it was great to see how people who worked for the government, were realtors, worked for non profits or were recovering lawyers etc blossomed as artists.

I would be into working on this topic. I think its a great one. What do you have in mind?

Annual Convention 2020
Session Proposals Now Open!

Featuring New Conference Structures and Proposal Process

Submit your session proposals for the 2020 Americans for the Arts Annual Convention! We want you and your ideas to take center stage in a national dialogue about the role of the arts in community life!

LOCAL TO GLOBAL. In 2020, the Annual Convention will land in Washington, D.C., for the first time in nearly 20 years. As one of the most historically diverse regions in the United States, the D.C. metro region is a place that is always local, national, and international simultaneously. Here, culture is interwoven everywhere. Residents who have been here for generations exist alongside constant waves of political arrivals and departures and cultures and flavors from across the world. In both the public and private sectors, this region houses one of the most thriving, diverse, and creativity-driven economies in the country.

NEW THIS YEAR! ONE CITY, TWO CONFERENCES!

New this year, the Annual Convention will include two simultaneous, separate, 2 ½-day conferences:

The Arts, Culture, and Community Life Conference is about the intersection of arts, culture, community development, civic engagement, creative economy, education, and social impact. This conference is designed for arts administrators, cultural leaders, community activists, artists, educators, and partners interested in bettering their communities through arts and culture.
The Public Art & Civic Design Conference will further dialogue and learning about art and design in the built environment. This conference is designed for arts administrators, artists, arts and culture leaders, placemakers and keepers, municipal agents, and other professionals in the planning, transportation, and development fields who are working at the intersection of art and the built environment.

Both conferences will run from Friday, June 26 to Sunday, June 28, 2020 in Washington, D.C., and both will include excursions to adjoining areas of Maryland and Virginia. Anyone can submit a session proposal for one or both of the conferences— we're looking forward to seeing all your great ideas!

I have read the instructions for applying to this conference and am confused by the direction to seek other projects to include.  What if the proposal is for an interactive workshop?  Would I need to ask for other people to also do workshops along with mine?

I am director of a theatre company for adults with disabilities. We have a workshop called "Act for Advocacy" that uses theatre games and exercises to teach people with disabilities how to stand up to bullies and other oppressive situations. We use real life situations that our company has experienced and also ask for audience members to contribute stories of oppression that we can then act out.

Hi Lynn,

We have done some work related to this topic or at least can connect you to folks who have, since we have done a couple of projects with the Center for Community Progress. Did you mean in Atlanta instead of Nashville for the Reclaiming Vacant Properties conference? My colleague, Rachel Engh, is attending and I'm sure she would be interested in chatting with you.  I will connect you separately.

Best,

Susannah

Request for Qualifications - Mecklenburg County Public Art Opportunity by Erin Taylor (11 Sep 2019 17:48 UTC)
Reply to list

The Arts and Science Council’s Public Art Program has published a new call to artists:

AMERICAN LEGION MEMORIAL STADIUM RENOVATION

Project Budget: $221,000 USD

Deadline to apply: October 7, 2019 at 11:59 EDT

The Arts & Science Council (ASC) is accepting qualifications from professional artists or teams of artists in response to a public art opportunity for Mecklenburg County’s American Legion Memorial Stadium renovation. ASC is seeking artists or teams of artists with a demonstrated record of creating memorial sculpture.

The selected artist/s will be asked to create an artwork that memorializes the American Legion and its service to military service members, veterans, and their families. The desired artwork will include, but is not limited to, representations of the human figure. This artwork will become a signature feature of American Legion Memorial Stadium and should create an atmosphere of reverence that persuades visitors and passers-by to pause and reflect on the service and history of the American Legion.

The memorial will be proudly sited at the front entrance of the stadium along Charlottetown Ave. – adjacent to Independent Park and connected via the Little Sugar Creek Greenway. Positioned along the stadium security fence, the memorial is accessible from both outside and inside the stadium. The artwork for the memorial will be integrated into a terraced slope. This terrace will include signage for American Legion Memorial Stadium and insignia representing the five branches of the military.

Finalists will have the opportunity to meet with stakeholders from Mecklenburg County American Legion posts, Park and Recreation staff, and the project design consultants in order to learn more about the site and scope for the memorial. Each finalist will be tasked with creating a conceptual proposal for the memorial artwork, and the commissioned artist will be selected based on their proposal and qualifications.

The complete RFQ can be found at http://www.artsandscience.org/resources-for/artists/calls-to-artists/ .

All applications should be submitted online at https://asc.slideroom.com.

Thank you!

We’d love to see examples of non-traditional sculptures or public art concepts that commemorate people or foundational stories for a city/community. (we’d like to initiate a project that does not end up as a traditional bronze sculpture). We’d also welcome examples of RFPs that generated creative submissions for this kind of project.

Thanks so much in advance!
