Hello Alexandra, and PAN colleagues,

There are many great art in bus shelter models!

For Seattle Metro I wrote a 1992 - 93 report for artists' opportunities in exisitng transit facilities, including bus shelters, bus stop poles and park and ride lots. The recommendations were funded and implemented in 1995 - 1997, along with my Metro Hair Survey.
The University of Washington's Seattle campus public art program's rotating collection of public art in the campus bus shelters started in 1995 with the visionary leadership of Kurt Kiefer.

Pierce Transit (Tacoma, WA) was my collaborator on the Hidden Trasures of Greater Tacoma, printed treasure maps and individual transit shelter placards sharing local wonders with bus system riders.  And of course LACMTA/Metro Art (metro.net), Metro King County, and Seattle Metro incorporated into diverse municipal and non-profit enterpises this century.

Bus shelter art projects can be challenging commissions.  Bus shelters are routinely installed and removed; maintenance is often problematic as shelter maintenance crews are rarely taught about the unique art requirements. And transit agencies are funded by diverse local, state and federal funding streams often circumscribing what can be spent on public art.

Best wishes for your program!

Hello all –

Durham, NC was recently allocated funds through participatory budgeting for the installation of some public artwork on new bus shelters throughout the city. Our goal is to commission local artists to create artwork using reclaimed materials  as the shelters will also have solar panel arrays to power lights and USB charging stations.

We are currently looking into what other municipalities have done for bus shelter art in their cities. If any cities have examples or are willing to share information on their process for putting public art on bus shelters, please share!

Thanks,
