University of Colorado Denver - Public Art Opportunity for new Benson Terrace by Ruth Bruno, OEDIT (02 Mar 2020 16:19 UTC)
Reply to list

Qualifications are requested from artists interested in creating a public sculpture for the new Benson Terrace on the University of Colorado Denver’s campus in downtown Denver, Colorado. The budget for this opportunity is $100,000 and the deadline is April 3, 2020. Applications can be submitted here and full RFQ, with reference images, is available here.

    ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER
The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) is a diverse teaching and learning community that creates, discovers and applies knowledge to improve the health and well-being of Colorado and the world.  CU Denver is located on the edge of downtown Denver, with buildings both in the central business district and on the Auraria Higher Education Center, a 150-acre campus shared with two other institutions of higher learning: the Community College of Denver and the Metropolitan State University of Denver.  For more, please visit http://www.ucdenver.edu/.

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION – BENSON TERRACE

In 2019, Bruce Benson stepped down as the President of the University of Colorado, ending a distinguished 11 year tenure that stands as the longest in the past 65 years for the University. In the spring of 2019, CU Denver announced that it would rename the landscaped Plaza adjacent to Student Commons as “Benson Terrace,” to honor the significant contributions of Bruce and Marcy Benson to the University.

As part of the terrace’s new design, CU Denver is looking to incorporate a signature art piece honoring the Bensons. The terrace will be redesigned to be more welcoming to visitors and passersby, particularly from the 12th Street side to encourage gathering, contemplation, exploration and the viewing of and interaction with the art piece. The redesign also has the goal of making Benson Terrace more symbiotic with the courtyard and diagonal plaza being created as part of the new City Heights Residence Hall and Learning Commons project, a first-year residence hall located on Larimer Street between 11th and 12th streets that is currently under construction.

    OPPORTUNITIES FOR PUBLIC ART

To honor the legacy of the Bensons, the Selection Committee is looking to select a public sculpture for installation in the completed Benson Terrace. The committee would like to commission an artist to create a larger than life size sculpture of a lynx, to celebrate CU Denver’s mascot, Milo the lynx. The committee is looking for a more realistic expression of the animal, but is open to more abstract/creative uses of form, such as a head only, variety of movement, etc. The committee would like the sculpture to be made of materials that have proven longevity and can capture the essence of the lynx, such as bronze or metal. The goals for the artwork are to serve as a statement piece and photo opportunity for the University, celebrate the Bensons, and draw people into or near the Benson Terrace to view and/or interact with the art piece.

The committee is interested in viewing past examples of the artist’s works in person, so please note in the Statement of Interest if they have any examples of artwork located in Colorado.

The Selection Committee will consider the following:

    ·         Artistic excellence

    ·         Demonstrated experience with this type of sculpture

    ·         Scale, material, form and content

    ·         Appropriate relationship to the function of the site

    ·         Resistance to general wear, vandalism, or theft

    ·         Ease of maintenance, minimal and low cost maintenance

All applications for this project are being accepted through the online platform, CaFÉ™ (www.callforentry.org ). No hard copy or emailed submissions will be accepted.

    Happy Monday, good folks,
UAC has launched a new Request for Qualifications for a large-scale, suspended sculpture for our reimagined Memphis International Airport. The call is open to artists based in the United States and will close on Monday, April 6, 2020. Full details can be found by following the link below.
We are particularly interested in submissions from artists of color, which we have found to be significantly lower on calls at this scale. We hope that you are able to share with your networks and please let us know if you have any questions!

New Resource! "Cultural Equity in the Public Art Field" by Patricia Walsh (02 Mar 2020 22:02 UTC)

    Hi PAN Listserv,

Last week Americans for the Arts in partnership with the Public Art Network Advisory Council launched a new resource to support national dialogue on cultural equity and inequities in the public art field. The paper “Cultural Equity in the Public Art Field” was written in collaboration with the 2019 Public Art Network Advisory Council Cultural members Amina Cooper, Chris Guerra, Susan Lambe, Julia Muney Moore, and Ruri Yampolsky.

Building on Americans for the Arts’ Statement on Cultural Equity, “Cultural Equity in the Public Art Field” provides a foundation for understanding the intersections of cultural equity in the public art field by naming several common inequitable issues, highlighting where the field is currently stands in this dialogue, and outlining a few ways to move forward. This document is the first in a series of resources to be launched this year to help public art administrators and other local arts practitioners to move the needle forward in understanding what cultural inequities exist in programs and processes and how to address them.

Attached is a copy and you can download it here.

I look forward to the ongoing dialogue around cultural equity.

Alexandra, we have been planning bus shelter public art in Greenville, South Carolina, and I did some research into similar programs recently.  We are considering wraps or posters displaying student art work from local schools that could be rotated.  After reviewing the different options, we will probably go with a vinyl wrap that can be rotated every few years.  It isn’t exactly what you were looking for, but here’s what I shared with our transit department:

In general, it looks like other cities do public art on bus shelters mostly using vinyl wraps, some use printed posters in the advertising panel, and a few have direct-painted murals or artist-designed shelters.

This one from Arlington, Virginia, looks like what we were talking about with wraps.  I really like that they can be translucent for safety, too.

It looks like Milwaukee does a similar type concept, and the images and diversity of content look great!

Here are some images from a partnership between the transit authority and a school district with vinyl wrap using student’s images in Ontario, Canada:

I’ve attached a call for artists from Raleigh that I thought was particularly helpful and has lots the details for the dimensions, locations, etc.

It looks like this volunteer-based program in Seattle is much less expensive to operate.  It also looks like most of the ones in Seattle are actually painted on the surface, so you could ask them about cost, cleaning, and maintenance.

    Hope this helps!

    Hello all –

Durham, NC was recently allocated funds through participatory budgeting for the installation of some public artwork on new bus shelters throughout the city. Our goal is to commission local artists to create artwork using reclaimed materials  as the shelters will also have solar panel arrays to power lights and USB charging stations.

We are currently looking into what other municipalities have done for bus shelter art in their cities. If any cities have examples or are willing to share information on their process for putting public art on bus shelters, please share!
