We're keeping a list as we develop our own fund: these are a few efforts that are COVID-19 specific:

Bare Opera Artist Relief Fund:  http://www.bareopera.org/arf

Specific fundraising effort that goes directly to supporting Bare Opera’s artists facing financial hardship due to the current pandemic. “Bare Opera wants to set an example for the opera community at large, driving home the message that artists are at the center of keeping alive this art form we cherish.” Any opera or performing contract that has been severed and unpaid due to the COVID-19 outbreak is eligible for up to 75% reimbursement. Artist application requires submission of original, signed contract with fee stated and letter from company evidencing cancellation of contract, with an explanation of the hardship caused by the cancellation.

Emergency Relief Fund for Artists - Springboard for the Arts, MN - Crowdsourced thru www.givemn.org. Currently raised almost 8k, with promise from Springboard to add $10K
The Personal Emergency Relief Fund helps artists in Minnesota recover from personal emergencies by helping pay an unanticipated, emergency expense due to COVID-19.

  • Lost income due to the cancellation of a specific, scheduled gig or opportunity (i.e. commissions, performances, contracts.

  • Artists may request up to $500 to compensate for cancelled work that was scheduled and now lost.

  • Not available for future gigs at this time.

  • 10K committed from Springboard for the Arts and committed MN funders as well as crowd sourced campaign.

Boston Artist Relief Fund - City of Boston Arts and Culture
The Boston Artist Relief Fund will award grants of $500 and $1000 to individual artists who live in Boston whose creative practices and incomes are being adversely impacted by Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

  • Welcome applications from all artists living in Boston, but will prioritize lower income artists and artists who have not been funded through City-led grants during this fiscal year (July 1, 2019-present). The fund will be open for but not limited to the following uses:

  • Recouping financial losses due to cancelled events. This includes but is not limited to:

    • Performances in all performing arts disciplines

    • Readings, panels, and speaking opportunities

  • Reimbursement for travel expenses related to creative work that you paid for yourself. This includes but is not limited to:

    • Attending conferences and convenings that have been cancelled

    • Artist Residencies

    • Touring

  • Offsetting loss of income for teaching artist who could not teach during this time because of cancelled classes and school closures

  • Support for artists working full or part-time in the service industry who have lost supplemental income used to support their creative practices.

Seattle Artists Relief Fund Amid COVID-19

GoFundMe campaign at $129,000 - already disbursing funds to artists. City of Seattle is pointing to this crowd sourced fund and seemingly not creating their own.

Musicians, DJ’s, independent chefs, caterers, actors, directors, writers, spoken word artists, teaching artists, all of these peoples jobs rely on people showing up for events but events are being canceled.

A large percentage of artists supplement their incomes with part time jobs often in the service industry which is another industry that is being hit hard.

Application: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LHJNLQV

Chicago Artist Relief Fund: https://www.gofundme.com/f/chicago-artists-relief-fund

Artist-created GoFundMe in response to the COVID-19 crisis. “Priority will be given to BIPOC [Black, Indigenous, and People of Color] artists, transgender & nonbinary  & queer artists, and disabled artists - but we aim to help as many Chicago-area artists in need as possible. Our ability to do that will depend on how much we can raise.” Inspired by the Seattle fund. They have temporarily suspended applications because the response from artists needing support was so huge.

NC Artist Fund Relief Fund: a collaboration between Artspace, PineCone, United Arts Council and VAE Raleigh https://vaeraleigh.org/artist-relief-fund

This fund has been created to support creative individuals who have been financially impacted by gig cancellations due to the outbreak of COVID-19.  100% of donated funds will go directly to artists and arts presenters in North Carolina.

  • Open to any artist, arts presenter, or arts venue.

  • Goal to disburse funds weekly depending on current funding.

  • Applications to be reviewed by a staff panel of collaborating orgs/funders.

  • Not based on merit of work, but on need alone.

  • Priority given to specific region and most vulnerable: artists of color, queer artists, and artists with disabilities.

Michigan Music Alliance’s Michigan Artist Relief Fund (in collaboration with Walk the Beat--a music nonprofit regularly raising funds to get musical instruments in kids’ hands)https://www.michiganmusicalliance.org/artist-relief-fund

Limited to relief for music artists, funded through a GoFundMe campaign. “We welcome applications from any full-time musicians living in Michigan, but will prioritize artists with severe financial impact (mostly from cancelled events) and immediate need. The fund will be open for recouping financial losses due to cancelled music events.” Applicants must live in the state of Michigan and must prove live performance as a musician is their primary source of income. Payments will be a maximum of $500 per cancelled gig on a first-come, first-served basis. Inspired by the Boston fund.

Artist Relief Treehttps://www.facebook.com/donate/1080011789032749/

Artist-originated Facebook fundraiser for national artists relief: upon application, gives out a flat, one-time $250 on a first-come, first-served basis. Besides an application, the only requirement is that applicants share the existence of the fundraiser with their networks to increase contributions. Have raised over $165,000 in 6 days and have received applications requesting over $875,000 in support.

Artist Trust is currently in survey stage and perhaps developing a fund. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AT-Covid-19-Response

Keeping in mind that GRACE was created before COVID-19 when our main concern was keeping our workers housed and financially stable, here’s how we do it.

We meet with the applicant personally (which may not be practical for all of you). While they are here, we call the creditors from whom they have received invoices or bills that they are having trouble paying. The bills usually include account numbers to which we refer in our conversations. I always get the name of the contact at the creditor’s office and send the GRACE Fund payments to their attention. We have never had trouble getting the funds credited correctly.

We made these policies after speaking to our local homeless agencies and nonprofit partners who work with distressed communities all the time (which we did not). They had experience with people in dire circumstances, experience from which we benefited. Their caution to us was that we reserve our resources for the arts and culture field and not become targets for people who might be looking for ways to game the system.

GRACE donors seem to be reassured by that. In fact, we often are able to negotiate discounts from creditors on behalf of our applicants because they know they will be paid quickly and in one lump sum by GRACE Funds.

Let me know if you all have any more questions. Wild times.

We are keeping an internal list of these relief funds, as we are creating our own. Thank you again for the information on the GRACE fund.  My question is: logistically, how does paying the bills directly to the institution work? Have there ever been problems with the payments not getting credited properly?

This is awesome. Are you willing to share your criteria for how the grants are awarded?

We are looking into this now in Albuquerque. This is my first priority telecommute assignment 😳, so I’m looking for examples of criteria as well and will share what we come up with.
