Hi Amanda,
The Navigation Esplanade in Houston converted an existing tree-lined neutral ground into a public pedestrian friendly space.  Built in to the infrastructure are solar powered lights, permanent tables chairs and covered spaces. Prior to COVID closings they programmed annual civic events and street festivals, plus a year-round, weekly farmers market.  Because it is down the center of the street, they can close either or both sides for the several blocks of the Esplanade for events and even fence it for those that are ticketed.

Klyde Warren Park in Dallas was built onto a "cap park" at street level that covers lanes of freeway below.  They built into the lane alongside the park, designated food truck parking with numbered spaces and 220V power at each spot, so that they trucks did not have to use loud fuel powered generators. They also have a stage, restaurant, restrooms, playground and daily programmed events.

Missed seeing you and Chris IRL at TAM this year!

Subject: streetscape and outdoor stage intervention ideas

Hello All,

Creative Waco is working to provide guidance to our city planners on some public art interventions as part of a streetscape improvement project. The area is planned as a "festival street" with several shaded seating areas, a food truck area and a small stage and grassy plaza running along the corridor. I'd love to see some great examples of interventions that include stage backdrops, pavilions, shade structures, dumpster/compactor shields, walls, fencing, etc. Photo, links, or names of parks or neighborhoods that have done this well would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
--
