Hello Randella,

Here is a link to OSHA requirements for such things, and might be a good place to start.

Hope that helps

Subject: Public Art Project: Tunnel Lighting Requirements

Dear Colleagues:

I’m working on a public art project for a 300-foot-long, 12-foot-tall, 16 foot-wide subterranean passageway. The tunnel is sited 30-feet below the interstate. The artist is being commissioned to create a programmable, permanent light installation to increase visibility and enhance resident safety. Safety of course is paramount, so I’m inquiring how I might determine the minimum lighting level requirement as it pertains to safety in tunnels?

Any suggestions and/or resources would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Randella
