Hi James,
We do not pay any selection panel members in Aurora, CO. They are generally expected to participate in 3 meetings with the first one being 1.5-2 hours, the second one is about 3 hours, and the third one is generally about 3.5 hours. If there are a large number
of applicants, there can be some additional on-line jurying taking place independently prior to the second meeting. So, maybe a maximum of 10-12 hours. If we were to pay panelists, that would likely need to come from the art acquisition budget as our administrative
budget is already squeezed tight, and it is hard to imagine that anyone would choose to diminish the funds that could be spent on the art.
Most people seem to find it to be an unusual and enriching experience, significantly different than anything else they are engaged in, and are generally thankful for the opportunity to participate.

Subject: Honoraria for selection panelists?
Hello all, could you please share your wisdom regarding paying an honorarium to selection panelists that are being recruited from the community? We currently have an ad-hoc committee where committee members with long experience in the
arts favor paying selection panelists that are being recruited from the community. The other members of the committee express reservations. Panelists will work 15-20 hours, resulting in a recommendation of a proposal finalist and alternate to our Municipal
Art Commission. Could you please share:
- Do you pay honoraria to selection panelists that are recruited from the community? (MAC members who also sit on the selection panel are not paid.)
- If so, how much is your typical honorarium? We have imagined $500 for 15-20 hours of work.
- What funding source do you use for the honoraria? In KC, the authorizing language for the One Percent for Art seems to prevent those funds from being used for anything other than
artist contracts. Consequently, I’m considering using a small general fund budget, but that path seems to have its drawbacks.
Many thanks,
