    Hi all,
I am the arts and humanities coordinator for the City of Takoma Park in Maryland, and I will be issuing a call soon for artist-designed bike racks. If you've issued a recent call or know of one, I'd appreciate it if you would share it with me. I'm trying to anticipate all of the parameters and potential issues down the road so the call addresses them at the front end.
    Thanks,
    Brendan Smith

    Hi Brendan,

Bike racks are a very popular project here in Atlanta. Here is a wonderfully clear process/call:

    Hey Brendan,
For what it's worth, Liz Cornish, Director of Bikemore, shared her perspective on sculptural/artwork integrated bike rack designs during this presentation from the Maryland Virtual Arts Summit last spring. The title should link to the youtube recording.
Public infrastructure like signal boxes and bike racks are opportunities for creative placemaking. Artists and local experts discuss best practices and policies.
I'm also excited to see what other resources and references this request might bring up.

    Hi Brendan,

We have a number of artist designed bike racks in Sacramento.  Only issue we have had was at one location where the adjacent property owner was probably not involved enough in selecting the location.   They are an ice cream shop and a number of children started to use the bike racks (which had a number or interesting shapes and colors) as a playground.  As you can imagine, it only takes one accident for this unpermitted use to become an issue.  Ultimately, we had to remove the bike racks from that particular location.

Although the install was done before my time, lessons learned mostly were the importance of discussing these projects with adjacent property owners before they are installed.  While the racks were in the public right of way, more thought should have been given (and more dialogue should have been had) with the adjacent business owner.

    Hope that is helpful.

    Best,

    Donald

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    February 22, 2021

    FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT:

Julie Barry, Senior Planner for Arts & Culture

City of Salem | Department of Planning & Community Development

    98 Washington St., 2nd Floor | Salem, MA  01970

CITY OF SALEM, MA is pleased to announce the launch of the 2021 ARTISTS′ ROW CALL FOR CREATIVES & PUBLIC ARTISTS for the Artists’ Row Public Artist in Residence Program

Mayor Kimberley Driscoll and the Salem Public Art Commission seek Creatives to participate in the City of Salem’s newly revitalized Artists’ Row Public Artist in Residence initiative.

Artists’ Row consists of four artist ‘stalls’, a restaurant, and a public restroom and is centrally located in historic downtown Salem at 24 New Derby St., across from Old Town Hall and Derby Square. This area, at the heart of the City, was originally built as a marketplace and continues to be a thriving public plaza and pedestrian way. The City of Salem respects, values, and celebrates the diverse life experiences and unique heritages, attributes, characteristics and perspectives that make each person who they are. We believe that bringing diverse individuals together through the Arts allows us to collectively and more effectively address the issues that face our communities.

The Artists’ Row initiative is a seasonal program that provides space for artists and artisans looking to build their audience and/or arts practice through daily engagement with residents and visitors to Salem. Participation in the Artists’ Row program is envisioned as a springboard opportunity for creatives wherever they are in their career that can help take them to the next stage/level in their unique professional development journey. It is very much a shared space for artists and visitors alike, where creativity happens, and unique arts-related goods and activities can be experienced in an animated public place.

The City of Salem is currently looking to fill one (1) paid position for a Public Artists in Residence, lasting for a term of 8 months. The City is interested in uses that will contribute to the vibrancy of the Artists’ Row community and this important gateway to Salem’s bustling downtown. The variety of activities/uses considered for Artists’ Row spaces include, but are not limited to, original uniquely produced or handcrafted artworks and products, performances, art ‘happenings’, art ‘interventions’, art making, and temporary public art installations.
