For projects in our historic districts, the city pulls a list of property owners within a certain radius (600 ft or 3 property owners, whichever is less, by law) around the location and gives us address labels, and we have to send the paperwork announcing when the public review will be. They then have the option of attending the review, sending written comments, or just ignoring it. Most people just ignore it.

If you have that defined radius, and your city has a GIS site (like ours does), it's a fairly simple, although time consuming and tedious, process to go on the GIS site, click on properties, obtain the property owner's address, and send them a card, maybe directing them to the project website or other information online. If you work for the city there may be a quicker way of getting the addresses. It's really boring to do this, but I wouldn't skip this step if it's required.

Good morning colleagues,

I was hoping to get your feedback regarding a requirement in our mural policy for private projects.  Prior to Public Art Commission approval of a proposed design we are required to send notice to a neighborhood organization with jurisdictions over the area.  In the case of a mural being proposed currently in a business area, no such organization exists.  In order to get the adequate neighborhood feedback we are considering approaching the neighboring individual business owners/tenants.  I don’t have a method in place to do this and am estimating between 35 to 50 businesses, just within that block.  Has anyone had the opportunity to explore this type of outreach and do you have a strategy for implementation?  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,
