Mandy’s approach is similar to how we handle things in Aurora, CO as well.
Additionally, we do try to pay one comprehensive fee that includes travel, and that fee is the same for all artists on a given project. The time spent collecting receipts and reimbursing travel costs for both the artist and the program
is just not time well spent.

Great question! What are your expectations for the artist to accomplish with the honorarium, as that helps inform the amount?
- What meetings are expected and are they in-person or virtual: site visit, proposal meeting, community engagement, etc.
- Is travel, lodging to come from the honorarium?
- How developed of a concept does the RFQ call for: this could vary from just an interview with the artist (no proposal expected) to a full-fledged proposal with draft budget, timeline,
and maintenance expectations.
- Are digital renderings required? Physical models?
- Each of these have different time requirements on design time and/or if they need to engage with specialists (engineer, conservator, fabricator) to inform deliverables. From recent
projects, these fees range from $65-150 hourly.
I tend to put together an estimate based on all these factors, with recent honorarium amounts ranging anywhere from $750-$2,500 for budget totals ranging from $20,000-$325,000.
I’d be real interested to hear artist perspectives on this too!

How do you determine the honorarium/stipend amount for artist proposals when in the finalist stage of a competitive selection process?
% of budget? Set amount? Is there a min./max.?
We operate under a %for Art policy, but there is no set rule on this aspect.
