Hello Renato,

I am reaching out to you because my background is in Public Art for Infrastructure. I have insights into the process of Artists working in infrastructure. For infrastructure projects, it is best if the Artist is included on the Design Team with the Engineering Team. Most often, I have been contracted directly through the Engineering Prime, as with WSP, for the East Kellogg Project, with advocacy and review provided by the Art or Design Commission. I would like to introduce you to our East Kellogg Project, that completed last year. This project raised the bar for infrastructure in Wichita, KS. Below are short video links to a process summary and to  the final work. We worked in integrated forms: concrete patterning for barriers, abutments and walls; form-giving for piers; railing designs and programmable LED lighting. This Project was achieved by bidding the Aesthetics with the Project whole. If you are interested in discussing this process, please connect. I would be happy to talk with you about best approaches and methods for involving Artists on infrastructure projects.

Best,
Vicki

Hi PAN network,

I am reaching out with the hopes of learning a bit more from your programs through further conversations, reading samples of similar RFQ’s/RFP’s you’ve put out, and/or project-related contracts.

The Salt Lake City Public Art Program has allocated funding for a transportation project that will transform one of our city’s main viaducts, a major bridge connecting our two halves of town, into a more inviting, welcoming, and less car-centric space. One of the core elements of this project will consist of adding a dedicated bicycle/pedestrian lane and a barrier. Our program would like to use our public art funding to involve an artist as an active participant in the viaduct’s design process and engage in conversations with our program, city officials in Transportation and Engineering, and the bridge design consultants. Ultimately, we’d like for an artist to include artist-design elements within the bridge itself (painted concrete, barrier additions, etc.). The timeline for this project is changing, but we anticipate design and outreach to take place in late 2022-2023 and construction to occur in 2024.

We are super excited to have a project in which our city colleagues in other departments want to pursue an artistically-driven project. However, our program has never pursued a project using this model before (using our public funds to bring on an artist as a designer/consultant vs. picking a “proposal”), so we are excited to learn more from you all!

Gracias & saludos from Salt Lake City,
Renato
