Hi Megan,

I work a lot with architects on our public art installations. They are usually open in helping us find the best locations and planning other logistics. I don’t worry about offending them, since it seems that most architects I work with have experience with incorporating public art installations to their projects. At the end of the day, you are their client, and they should be able to assist you in creating the best possible scenario for incorporating public art if that is what you wish for your site. The architects are valuable to the planning of the public art because they can advise on the best ways to commission art that will be cohesive to the building design.

Hope this is helpful!

Best,

Josie

Subject: Question about working with architects when commissioning work for new buildings

Good afternoon,

We are in the process of designing a new aquatics center here in Reno. The building design has a perfect space for placing artwork on the exterior facade near the main entrance. We are interested in proposing it as a spot to commission artwork for. It is a very large and visible space--essentially a large concrete wall.

Do any of you have experience working with architects on something like this? Our main concern is that this building is their design--we certainly don't want to upset them if we place art here--but we also want to commission something for the space. Just wondering if anyone has advice on how to navigate this and how best to proceed.

Thank you,

Megan
