JH Public Art worked with an artist team to design a set of street furniture for complete street projects. Most of our are too small to individually support design and development for public art, so we took the approach of investing in the design for amenities that can used frequently. https://jhpublicart.org/art/streetfurniture

    Hi Sierra,

Here are two examples from New Hampshire.

Concord: The Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce and Creative Concord have generated a number of public art programs and events on the heels of the city’s Complete Streets renovation. The City’s Complete Streets plan and resulting arts programs was informed, in part, by their participation in the AFTA A&EP survey.  https://www.concordnhchamber.com/impact/arts/Keene: The Keene Arts Core project is looking at ways to activate and elevate the arts as part of the streetscape and the immediately surrounding built environment along a targeted section of their Main Street. Currently in planning phase with the support of a Citizens’ Institute on Rural Design (CIRD) grant, the project integrates Complete Streets strategies. https://monadnockartsalive.org/keene-arts-core

Stipends for Advisory Group/Review Panel Participants by Julie Barry (26 Jan 2023 20:28 UTC)

    Greetings Arts & Culture Colleagues,

The City of Salem, MA is looking for ways to remove barriers to civic engagement opportunities through exploring the possibility of offering need-based stipends/ honorariums to community members for participating in arts & culture advisory groups and artists selections committees when they are not engaged with these committees as part of their gainful fully time employment.  Some of the questions we have are eligibility determination, how do we decide who gets a stipend and who doesn’t and why; as well as how much to offer, a flat rate honorarium or a per hour/per meeting stipend.

We were wondering if there are any other communities out there already doing this and if so, if you might be willing to share any policies or guiding documents that you might have around this.

The goal of course is to be fair, equitable, and transparent in this process and to remove barriers to encourage engagement and participation.

I look forward to hearing the thoughts of this group.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Unless it’s cost prohibitive, why not offer to pay everybody who isn’t getting paid to be there?

If you intend to pay people for their work, offer it to everyone. Some won’t take it, some will. Does it matter?

We offer to pay everyone and we pay a flat honoraria based on $50.00 per hour. Inclusive of travel, if there is any.

We developed a policy that anyone who isn't paid to be there as part of their regular job gets paid for their work, scaled to the amount of effort required, $150-$500.  Sadly, we can only do this with projects that are funded by an outside organization when we develop the project funding request and include it as a project expense. For our self-funded projects we have to rely on people who are already paid by another employer, or who have previously told us that we can call on them anytime.

RE: Stipends for Advisory Group/Review Panel Participants by Hsu, Lillian (26 Jan 2023 21:51 UTC)

    Hey, Julie!

At Cambridge Arts we determine an honorarium for each committee where we need community participation, e.g. artist selection committees, poetry juries, grant review committees, etc.  We pay the same honorarium for all community participants who are not city staff, architect/engineer consultant, or have some other role on the project as part of their job.  Different projects have somewhat different scopes in terms of time commitment, so we consider hours required as well as the budget available for the overall project. Often the honorarium is in the $250-400 range.

Another step we’ve taken to increase access is to post a call for participants rather than finding people through our networks.  We are finding this a great way to spread the word about the program, to identify community members whom we may never have known about otherwise, and to increase availability of the opportunity more widely.

    WOOOHOOO!!! GO CAMBRIDGE ARTS!!!  😊

I am super proud of my former employer!!  Way to rock the house with setting incredible precedents!

I have 2 follow up questions:

For the $250-400 honorarium, what is the expected # of hours contributed?

I love the open call idea, would you be willing to share that document with me?

    Julie,

I’m attaching the press release/email that we sent out recently calling for candidates to participate in the poetry selection committee for our annual Sidewalk Poetry contest.  For this task, each selection committee member has to read all the submitted poems on their own time and then convene with the whole group for one 3-hour meeting, during which the committee selects five winners.   Last year we received 250 poems, so that time commitment entails reading all of those poems on their own schedule (although the poems are short to fit a sidewalk panel).  As it says in the call, we are paying each community member $250.

Selection Committee members will review all poems submitted to the contest without any attached identifying information of the person who submitted the poem. The Sidewalk Poetry Contest receives poems from Cambridge residents of all ages. If you are planning to submit a poem to the 2023 Sidewalk Poetry Contest, you should not apply to be on the selection committee. However, you are welcome to apply, and if you are not selected, you can submit a poem.
The Cambridge Sidewalk Poetry Program is an ever-popular program that each year selects five winners from the pool of submissions. Winning poems will be stamped in sidewalks around the city and posted on the Cambridge Arts website. For more information and examples of past contest winners, visit the website and Sidewalk Poetry Program story map: cambridgema.gov/sidewalkpoetry.
Apply by Feb. 6. We will contact you if you are selected.
Please contact us with any questions at 617-349-4388 or sidewalkpoetry@cambridgema.gov.
    About Cambridge Arts
Cambridge Arts is the River Festival, Open Studios, Gallery 344, Sidewalk Poetry, Summer In The City, Community Supported Art, grants to artists, street performers, more than 280 works of contemporary public art in every neighborhood of the city, and a conservation program to preserve them for the future.
We are the Cambridge Arts Council, a City agency that funds, promotes, and presents high-quality, community based arts programs for the benefit of artists, residents, and visitors in Cambridge. Active since 1974, Cambridge Arts is one of the most dynamic local arts agencies in the country. Cambridge Arts exists to ensure that the arts remain vital for people living, working and visiting Cambridge.
Cambridge Arts is located on the Indigenous homelands of the Massachusett, Nipmuc, Pawtucket, and Wampanoag peoples. We are guests on this land. We honor the people who were here before colonization, are here now, and will be here in the future. In our work as a cultural organization, we are committed to doing whatever we can to dismantle harmful structures built from violent colonialism. Our work seeks to expand the visibility of and celebrate the histories, cultures, and stories of indigenous peoples, who are of this place.

Cambridge Arts embraces a vision that welcomes and supports everyone. Believing that a multiplicity of perspectives is essential to a strong society, we are committed, both in our policies and practices, to building participation in and awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the arts and all cultures. In our ongoing work to address cultural and historical inequities, we strive to be a community anchor that reflects the entire Cambridge community and expands access, opportunities, and inclusion in every form of creative expression. We value diverse voices and people of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, abilities, gender identities, sexual orientations, socioeconomic situations, religions, citizenship statuses, and family configurations.
The City of Cambridge does not discriminate on the basis of disability. We will provide auxiliary aids and services, written materials in alternate formats, and reasonable modifications in policies and procedures to persons with disabilities upon request.
