Hello All,

I’m a public artist who has been able to obtain both commercial liability and vehicle insurance, each at cost of $1200-$1500 annually for $2 mil in coverage. These policies and coverage levels are required from many of the municipalities who commission my work. I don’t think you have to be an architect or GC to get these policies.  Most of the objects that I create are low to the ground and don’t require an engineer’s review.

Hello All,

Usually the professional liability insurance requirement can be satisfied if the artist’s engineer carries that insurance.  Wording of the agreement may need to be adjusted to reflect that.  From my understanding, most artists are not able to get professional liability insurance for themselves since art is not a licensed field, but the rare ones who are also licensed architects or general contractors may have it.

All the best,

Hi--we have found that artists are unable to get this on their own, but if the project has a policy that covers their architects and designers the artists can usually get included on that.

Hi PAN,

I’m an artist who is currently renewing my liability insurance.

My annual premium to meet the typical general liability insurance thresholds is about $700.

In the past, I’ve relied on my personal auto insurance to meet the auto insurance thresholds. But a current public art project that I’ve won has much higher thresholds. Thus, I’m waiting on a quote from my broker on adding “hired and non-owned auto” coverage to my existing business policy. I imagine this will push my premium well over $1K annually. Still TBD.

Kindly,
Stacia

Hi PAN:

I am reaching out to see if other municipalities require professional liability insurance for their artists. I am also seeing if artists who have had to get this kind of insurance could share the costs for that.

Many thanks,
Deirdre
