Totally agree, and great points, Julia. The idea of a tool is essential, and how all of a sudden fine art becomes data. AI scrapes billion of images from the internet, paired with
written descriptions (which can be correct or sometimes misleading.) Unfortunately, some AI software doesn’t disclose their system datasets and origins, making the work fail the legal principle of “fair use”, especially for copyright-protected works.
Sincerely,
Gilbert

We run a gallery. Although we have not sat down and figured out a policy, here are my thoughts about AI-generated art:
1. AI is a tool, and like any tool, the results depend on the skill of the artist wielding it. From that perspective, I would not think to outlaw digital works done using ProCreate or PhotoShop, or a stone sculpture that used an air-powered
chisel.
2. AI has been "trained" on works of other artists, often without their consent, and in the wrong hands and with nefarious prompts can end up damaging the reputation and market for artists whose works "inspired" the AI. This is extremely
problematic; however, outlawing the use of AI is not the approach to solving that problem. The approach is tighter rules on the people creating the AI software, and more public education about artists, copyrights, and originality (which is absolutely possible
with AI).
3. It will take time for artists to figure out how to "collaborate" with AI and have the results reflect the artists' creative work, not the AI's algorithms. I think we as curators need to be part of that transformation and adding our expertise.

Hi All,
I’ve been reading about how AI generated artworks are creating controversy in exhibitions and am wondering if anyone who runs exhibits or maintains a gallery has developed some sort of policy to address this new challenge? It seems like it’s difficult to detect so I’m not sure how it would be enforced… Perhaps simply state that AI generated artworks are not accepted, and hope people abide by the rules. Thoughts?
