I don’t want to make anyone faint, but in my art consulting role, with the Client doing the wall prep and paying for the lift, I’ve sourced some lovely, lovely murals by each city’s local artists
in several states across the country.
The cost, including concept, rendering, revisions, paint and mural creation, has been
approximately $12 per square foot including my fee.
The result is that the artist can still make enough money to cover two or more months of food, apartment rent, etc. (if the wall is 1,000 square feet).
My Clients also paid for professional photography of the pieces, which they used to market themselves and also shared the photos with the artists so they could show off their work.
I will say this pricing does give me fewer choices of artists in major expensive cities like LA, but it’s still doable even in those big cities.
Best,
Judy

Artist’s experience level, Level of detail in the mural as well as the type and condition of the substrate are factors that we consider. Concrete is a very ‘thirsty’ substrate and drinks up
a lot more paint than say sheet rock would even after priming. We also consider are we asking the artist to prep, prime, and then seal the finished product or are we doing that outside of the artist stipend. As a smaller community with a fledgling public
art program, we typically strive to pay our artists $20-$40/ square foot of surface which would include design, materials, and application. Wall prep, priming and sealing and any lifts or scaffolding would come at an additional cost that we cover outside
of the artist stipend when possible.

Hi Sarah--we usually start our rates at $50/s.f. no matter the scale. We also pay a contractor for prep (powerwash, prime) and coatings, and of course we pay for the lifts. Having said that--sometimes we will go higher or lower depending
on the nature of the design (for example--portraits are higher, large areas of flat color are lower) but we never go lower than around $30/s.f.

Dear PAN Colleagues,
We are commissioning some large-scale outdoor murals (10,000 – 20,000 square feet) and I’d love input about appropriate artist fees. We are planning to pay the artist a set fee for design/production, and we are paying for materials and lifts separately.
For a mural of this scale, what do you typically budget for artist fees (not including materials, lifts, etc.)? I’ve seen mural prices quoted at $10-$50 per square foot, but for larger-scale outdoor murals do you apply a similar square footage rate?
I understand that artist fees will depend on factors such as the intricacy of the mural design and where the artist is in their career, but I would love to hear how others go about setting a fair price for artist compensation.
Thank you,
Sarah
