Hi, Robin
I've been looking into that myself as part of The Corner Project that I'm doing here in Chicago.  I met with a couple of the design engineers at CDOT and they told me about height restrictions, distance objects can be placed from curbs and curb cuts.  You can find detailed regulations by state in the USDOT's Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices:  https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/resources/state_info/index.htm

Hello Colleagues,

I am working with a group that is interested in creating public art installations in a small downtown area. They are considering designing “bump-out” areas on the sidewalks for artwork installation. Beyond the challenges of possible damage from vehicular traffic, does anyone have experience with this type of installation? What are the pro’s and con’s?

Thanks for any information you can share.

Robin
