RE: Roundabouts

I agree that each roundabout will likely have to be evaluated. We completed this large project in a Roundabout last year (attached: Stix by Christian Moeller) and our state DOT required a traffic study. Essentially we kept any of the art away from the edge of the roundabout and nothing could be higher than 3.6’ in certain zones. I can send you the plan, if interested.

Thanks,

Caroline

I think a lot has to do with the size of the roundabout.

Kings Beach in California has 3 smallish roundabouts that are going in and had to be reviewed by state DoT - troy corliss is one of the artists and could probably tell you the state regulations.

In LA area, Freyja Bardell and Brian Howe completed this one - as you can see the artwork is ground level and up, but the roundabout itself is quite large: http://www.publicartinpublicplaces.info/faces-of-elysian-valley-2017-by-freyja-bardell-and-brian-howe

I, too am interested in the answers to this for a Triangle space created by 3 streets into which we will place a public art piece.

Hi Steph—

We have few roundabouts in Indianapolis, but there are tons in Carmel, IN just to our north and they are starting to put sculpture in them.

Here’s their latest installation: http://www.indyartsguide.org/public-art/beacon-bloom/  It is on the border between Indianapolis and Carmel.  You will notice that most of the “interest” is up high with very little blockage down at street level.  I believe that was deliberate.  I can put you in touch with the artist if you like, to see if he was given any specific instructions during the design process.

Best,

Does anyone have design guidelines for placing and sizing public art in a roundabout?   I am specifically looking for information that will keep the cone of vision open so that drivers can see other cars and pedestrians.  I have found several resources from the Department of Transportation but curious if there are other standards that agencies are using.  If you have a RFP that includes this info, please send it my way!
