Michael,

I am also starting this work in Santa Cruz for 2018 - with a retreat scheduled with my Arts Commission with a facilitator who is an expert in cultural equity issues and has trained boards like this before. We are aiming for a 1-page policy/statement, an update to our Vision, Mission and Values and forming an ad hoc advisory committee that can be convened to review projects and proposals from an equity lens. We may not run ALL of art projects through this committee but certainly some, as applicable.

We may also generate other ideas and steps over the coming months. Less formally, we have given opportunities to several artists that have never done public art projects prior – and with a little extra coaching and guiding have had fantastic results. Our Beach Flats mural is a good example.

RAAC’s equity work in Portland, Oregon and equity statement was particularly good as an example.

The AFTA equity resources are also helpful.

Best wishes!

Thanks,

Subject: Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness in the Public Art process

Greetings Public Art Community –

The public art policy group for Denver’s Commission on Cultural Affairs is interested in learning about and exploring efforts to increase diversity, equity and inclusiveness for the city’s public art process. If you have any examples to share, stories to relate, or advice to give on public art efforts you’ve undertaken in your communities to increase participation by traditionally under-represented populations, we’d love to learn more, and are happy to share what we gather. Thank you in advance!

We in Denver are looking forward to sharing our city with all of you at the convention in June!

Best -

Michael Mowry

Cultural Affairs Commissioner
