Hi Emily,

We use PastPerfect here and it seems we’re always debating if there’s something better out there, as it is geared towards museum collections management. We are using a base version for now – but hoping to transition into the version offering an online portal for folks to view the collection digitally.

At PAN 2016 in Boston, I also was part of a small group discussion where this came up - and I believe a couple of folks said they used File Maker Pro to have something custom built?

Lori, what you’re working on sounds wonderful and we can’t wait to learn more!!!

Thank you,

Rebecca Holden

Subject: Re: Public Art Database Recommendations

Hello Emily:

The Public Art Archive is getting ready to launch a collection management system specific to the public art workflow with our technology partner, CollectionSpace.

I’ve included a bit of basic information about the system below, but I am happy to send more detail as needed. We are looking at a deployment date of March 2018, and we will host a few webinar sessions during that time.

The Public Art Profile:

The new collection-management tool is being developed in collaboration with CollectionSpace, an open-source collection-management system developed at the University of California at Berkeley. The Archive team will adapt the CollectionSpace software to reflect the administrative workflows particular to the management of public art collections. For an attainable annual subscription fee, the system will streamline efforts related to cataloguing, condition checks, conservation, commissioning and acquisition tracking. All of these processes will be customized to fit the needs of the public art field. In addition, users of the new Public Art Archive software will easily be able to transmit data immediately into the Archive, thus more readily sharing additions to the growing national public art collection.

Best,

All,

I was curious to see what you use as a database to manage your public art collection. I feel like what we currently use is much better suited for museums and I have had a hard time making it work for our collection. I wanted to see if there was something better suited for public art that I am missing.

Thank you in advance for your help!
