Hello All,
I’m looking for existing models of incorporating public art into private development.
I’m working with our planning department on their effort to revitalize a major street corridor here in Kent, WA. Their consultant developed design standards for both private development and public right of way throughout the corridor. Those standards make very brief mention of public art being required and now our planners are turning to me/the Arts Commission to help develop and articulate the vision and standards for artwork moving forward. (Of course, it would have been nice to have an artist doing a master plan in conjunction with the design standards, not after, but that’s not how it happened.) While we have an active public art program, we haven’t had experience incorporating public art into private development.
Does anyone have examples that specifically outline how developers are required to incorporate art into their projects and how the government entity engages in the process?
