In conjunction with a massive, long-term infrastructure project to correct a combined sewer overflow issue, our local water utility wants to host a project to paint manhole covers and do some street-surface painting to raise awareness of “what’s down below” and promote the positive outcomes of this admittedly disruptive construction.  They were inspired by Richmond’s storm drain art contest.

Does anyone have any experience with a manhole cover project and can provide some tips or cautionary tales?  Ideas for best materials?  How long would the painted manhole covers be expected to last?

Thanks in advance!
