Hi Colleagues,
When it rains it pours. We have several projects that are currently looking for artists as design team members - most of those have California residency requirement. In order to stay ahead of things, we're also creating a pool of national artists who are experienced in working with design teams and communities to develop art integrated into infrastructure, particularly transit.

Additionally, we do have a national call for up to four artists to create designs for our Market Street Canopies. These will be low relief designs in FRP, so a very graphic aesthetic is called for in this project. Please share.

Longer version:

San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is seeking artists for five upcoming projects, and an artist pool. The RFQ may be found atwww.bart.gov/art. Applications will be accepted though www.callforentry.org. Deadline is March 5, 2018 at 10 p.m. PST.

The five opportunities are:

  1. Market Street Canopies - Artist to design low relief element for the FRP canopy element
  2. Lake Merritt Plaza/Transit Operations Facility - Artist as Design Team Member
  3. Walnut Creek Station - Artist as Design Team Member
  4. Concord Station - Artist as Design Team Member
  5. Dublin/Pleasanton Station - Iron Horse Trail - Artist as Design Team Member

Lake Merritt Plaza/TOF, Concord and Walnut Creek Station seek an artist as design team member to participate in community engagement and identify opportunities for art to be incorporated into elements of the station that as part of the planned renovation, replacement or new construction. The project at Dublin/Pleasanton Station - Iron Horse Trail (IHT) is for an artist as design team member to participate in community engagement and identify opportunities to integrate art elements as part of an overall design program for bike/pedestrian access enhancement at the Dublin/Pleasanton station.

The Market Street Canopy project is seeking up to four artists to create low relief designs to be incorporated to the underside of new fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) canopies that will protect the escalator/stair access points to four stations along Market Street in San Francisco (Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell, and Civic Center). The canopies are already designed – this is an art enhancement project to that existing design. Artists submitting for the Market Street Canopy Project are not required to have experience as a design team member, and may submit for this project only and will not be placed in the pool for future design team opportunities.

Artists residing in the United States with appropriate work permits are eligible to apply for the pool. The five projects each have separate residency requirements, so please read the RFQ carefully.
