Thanks everyone! I will compile a spreadsheet with all of the opportunities and send it back to the thread for others to use.

Hi Amanda,

In addition to the great resources already provided, I am sending the attached essay AFTA commissioned on planning for public art in rural communities. It provides case studies on different projects and discusses how they are funded.

For the NEA, Our Town is great but there is also Challenge America Grants, has supported rural projects and Artworks: https://www.arts.gov/grants/apply-grant/grants-organizations

What we have also found is that when looking for funding, to also consider local foundations. Community foundations are a great resource in most areas: https://www.cof.org/foundation-type/community-foundations-taxonomy

There are also regional foundations that may support specific areas as well, such as the LOR Foundation in the mountain region and the Joyce Foundation in Great Lakes region.

Grantmakers in the Arts is a great resource to finding other financial sources as well: https://www.giarts.org/

Best,

Patricia

Amanda—you might check out these, from the state of Indiana.  Indiana is largely rural and most of these opportunities are geared towards the small and rural communities in the state, although they do not exclude urban places.

They also offer a page of funding hints here:  http://in.gov/arts/cptoolkit/2331.htm

Hello,

I am writing to ask if any of you know of any grants in rural America for arts and culture as well as placemaking.

We are having a hard time finding opportunities that specifically support rural communities.

Thanks in advance,

Amanda
