Sarah,
Thanks for sharing this piece for Aurora. We, here in Aurora, are also working on several new fire stations now. Each of our fire stations includes a community
room and we facilitate these projects just like other city buildings. Our fire men and women have a place at the art selection panel along with neighborhood representatives, the architect, a city council member, a public art commissioner and an artist.
We seem to have moved past the traditional expectations at fire stations and have found other ways of representing the work that these first responders engage in. The cycle of life. Our first responders are also concerned about fitting into, and being part
of the community. So, they come wanting to hear from the community and willing to explore how to make those connections. In the end they want something that they understand and are comfortable talking about when they are giving fire station tours.
Regards,
Roberta Bloom

Take a look at Rae Mahaffey’s work with fused glass panels in Fire Station #11 in Aurora, CO:
Inspired by folk art from around the world, the designs of these glass banners are adapted patterns found in textiles such as quilts, rugs and tapestries.
