African American Cultural Center Community Public Art Installation

The City of Virginia Beach Office of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the African American Cultural Center of Virginia Beach (AACC), is looking to create a dynamic, site-specific work of temporary public art that reflects the Center’s mission to connect, preserve, and celebrate Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County’s African American culture dating from the mid-1600s to the present. The artwork will inform and educate the public about African Americans’ achievements in business, politics, religion, city organization, to include African American history as well as inform Hampton Roads that this is the future site of the AACC. The AACC will be the regional leader in generating historical and cultural content through programs, artistic performances and curated exhibits.

·        Engage the community throughout the process.

·        Create a substantial community-based temporary work of public art.

Project Timeline

TEMPORARY SCULPTURAL INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION

The City of Virginia Beach Office of Cultural Affairs is looking to engage an artist, artist team or design firm to design and execute an exciting interactive, three-dimensional, temporary public art piece. The installation should transform an empty lot into a new, vibrant place for social interactions in the community, for both citizens and visitors. The work should create excitement and public interest while reactivating this space, acting as a catalyst for future temporary projects in Virginia Beach, and raising the profile of public art in Virginia Beach on a national and international platform.

Artwork Goals

Serve as a welcoming space for visitors, residents and families. g

To create a substantial interactive temporary work of public art within a minimum 400 square foot area.

Create excitement and interest for the community while appealing to a mass audience.

The design must be engineered and secured to withstand unsupervised public interaction, winds up to 135 mph on vertical elements, and the natural elements including seasonal changes and ocean air.

Is of the highest quality, creatively and technically, and provide stamped engineering plans.g

Meets all public safety, structural and maintenance standards including non-slip surfaces, no slip, trip and fall hazards, and complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Restrictions and Limitations: the structure cannot be designed as a playground, and must be open and visible to deter alternate use outside of the intended design, such as squatting or solicitation.

Artist will be responsible for any major repairs of the artwork for up to 2 years. Artist will be responsible for the installation and de-installation of piece.
