The Heinz Endowments seeks to engage an artist or artist team to create an artwork for a feature wall in the reception area of their newly renovated 30th floor office, located at 625 Liberty Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh. IKM Architects are designing the renovations, which are slated to begin in spring 2018 and be completed in fall 2018.

The Endowments are particularly interested in the opportunity to collaborate with a local artist or artist team to develop an artwork that enhances the new space and celebrates the mission of the organization. The project is an extension of the Endowments’ support of regional artists and its desire to foster a vibrant creative community in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

The Office of Public Art has been hired to facilitate an artist selection process and provide project management for the artwork commission. The artist will be selected through a two-step process. First, a selection committee comprised of members of The Heinz Endowments’ staff and outside arts professionals will review qualifications solicited through this open call. From this review, a shortlist of three to five artists will each be paid an honorarium of $1,800 to develop an initial design concept for the project. Shortlisted artists will present their design concepts to the selection committee in an interview, and will be asked to provide a preliminary project budget, preliminary schedule for fabrication and installation, and preliminary fabricator list for work that is not self-performed.

The finalist will be selected based on their proposed design concept, the strength of their past work, and their demonstrated ability to meet the budget and timeline. The budget for the final artwork is $32,000 including artist fee, fabrication, and installation. Please note that there may be an opportunity for some of the artwork design to be integrated into the construction process. The finalist will have the opportunity to meet with the architects and contractors prior to the completion of the renovation. The artwork is scheduled to be installed the week of October 8, 2018.

A scheduled information session will be held on April 10, 2018 for interested candidates to learn more about the project. For more details, please click here
