Hi Tamara,

What I’m going to say is in line with everyone else.

Our (infamous) Talus Dome sculpture is a popular “set” for fashion shoots and music videos, most of which happen on the fly without anyone in contact with us – and it’s fine. However, one film maker here in the city approached us and, on our advice, sent a courtesy “is it ok if I ...” email to Ball-Nogues Studio, and the artists were happy about it – even requested notification if the film were to play the film festival circuit so they could check it out and show support.

We’ve also seen music videos and fashion shoots at Vaulted Willow (Marc Fornes & THEVERYMANY).

If approached we will always recommend sending a courtesy email to the artist, and if a project were to involve extensive use of the location, we might even want something more formal (hasn’t come up yet).

And, including the artist names and artwork title in the thank you or location portion of the film’s end credits would be nice!

Best,

Eva Marie

Subject: Public Art Use in Film Productions?

Hi All – Does anyone have any experience with film productions shooting around their public art collections?

Is it necessary for film productions to get permission from the artist and/or from the municipality/province/state as the artwork owner to use a public artwork in their film? Would they be required to credit the work/artist at the end of the film?

My provincial colleague is asking about a large public artwork owned by the province that will be included in scenes shot near our Law Courts building.

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge!
