Hello All,

I am currently working with staff to develop a cost analysis document that can be used to determine the long-term maintenance complexity of a piece of public art, and therefore decide whether a standard one-time 3% of its value is appropriate to go into the university’s public art collection’s maintenance fund, or if the piece should be “billed” at a higher percent. So far we have created a list of questions to ask about a proposed work of art with points assigned to each question, with the idea that the number of points will indicate where the piece will fall on the sliding scale. Does anyone use a similar document or checklist that you would be willing to share? Does anyone use a sliding scale for up-front maintenance costs for pieces in your collection that is determined by their complexity/difficulty to maintain? If so, how to you assign that value? I’d appreciate any information that you’d be willing to share as we consider how we may rework the mandatory 3% flat fee for maintenance that is currently in place for the university’s collection.

Thank you,

Amanda Dyer
