Hey Carrie,
This is not specifically in reference to monuments but I’m attaching our Gifts Policy. At least half of the proposals we receive from private groups are intended
to be monuments or memorials in one form or another, and the first move is usually to go over our gifts policy closely and walk them through all the considerations and requirements.
The language in the document is somewhat broad to apply to any form of proposed gift, and allow for conversation about the specific project. When we are discussing
proposed monuments/memorials we are often starting with someone proposing a new figurative representation of someone. We begin the conversation about bringing a “concept” for the monument or project before our commission to consider how it may be realized
in other ways…(i.e. a monument to privateers at City waterfront does not necessarily need to take the form of a bronze pirate). If the donor already has a design or model of what they want to make and are unwilling to reconsider it limits how far the conversation
can go.
