Hi Emily,

In addition to general state office buildings, Florida's Art in State Buildings statute (passed in 1979) applies to all new public buildings (not dorms) constructed on the campuses of our 12 state universities. Community colleges and technical schools were not included in the statute.

The program requires an expenditure of up to .5% of construction costs to acquire artwork for permanent display in public areas of an eligible new structure. Like the other state agencies, our state universities usually set aside the maximum allowed as this is a popular enhancement to new construction (does not apply to renovations). Often the universities try to find ways to improve the art budget with matching funds as the statute amount was capped in 1994 at $100,000 (must have seemed a large amount back then).

Ball fields and stadiums are not considered buildings. Other athletic construction such as training facilities or gyms, do not qualify for the program either unless they also include classrooms, offices, etc. which are open to the public. See http://dos.myflorida.com/cultural/programs/art-in-state-buildings   for more information.

Let me know if you wish to know more,
Lee

Hi all,

Is there a comprehensive list of universities throughout the US that do 1% for art programs (or something similar)? More specifically, we are trying to figure out:

  • What universities do some type of dedicated % for art program?
  • What triggers the % for art funds (only new construction, new and renovations, construction projects over a certain amount, etc.)?
  • What % of the budget is used for public art?
  • Does your % for art program include projects on athletics facilities?
  • When was the program established?
  • How many pieces have been added since that time?

If that list exists, we would love to be able to track it down. Otherwise, I am happy to start compiling if you work for or have knowledge of a university percent for art program that you would like to contribute to a list that I can share with anyone who is interested.

Thanks for your help!

Emily
