Hi Matt –

AIPP recently embedded artist Rachel Wolfson Smith with the Austin Fire Department as a quasi-residency, allowing Rachel to ride along on calls and spend time in the fire house with staff, racking many hours learning about the department from the inside.

When the project was completed, we had feedback that AFD would prefer we use this process every time we have a public art opportunity associated with a fire station – so success! Here is a link to the RFQ!

More about the project: The experiment was highly successful and AFD felt the resulting artwork was a good addition to each of the six stations involved.

The artist talks about the project at kick-off in this blog post: http://www.rachelwolfson.com/blog/2016/8/18/what-is-the-afd-residency

Here is a thumbnail of one of the resulting works:

Subject: looking for examples of RFQ prospectus

Hello Fellow Public Art  Administrators,

We have been asked by our ABQ Fire department to include public art for a new fire station that they have started to design.  Instead of coming in completely after the fact,  they have request that an artist become a member of  the design team working in developing the new station  for the City.

We haven’t incorporated an artist as an member of a design team in sometime and would like to see successful models of how other programs have done this recently.  I am looking for any recent examples of RFQ’s  that seek artist/artist teams to join the  design team process that will also  ultimately lead to a public art work.   Any examples would be helpful.

Thanks,

Matt
