This is incredibly useful. Thanks fir sharing. Word documents would be really helpful so as to not recreate the wheel. And we will certainly credit you.
Many thanks

Subject: RE: "Outside the Box" Traffic Signal Box Art Wraps

The City of Grand Prairie Public Art Program hosted its first Traffic Signal Box Public Art Project last fall culminating in 21 artworks being installed this spring.  We received A LOT of help from other Art Coordinators based on a similar plea as yours.

We opted to allow the artist to either paint on the TSBs or produce Hi-Res art/photos that we wrapped.  We selected the wrapping vendor and paid them separately.

After studying all of the materials I received from the other cities, and after getting some information from others who do not participate in the Americans for the Arts list serve, I combined some of them to create our documents.   The links to the Participant Guides contain a lot of do’s and don’ts.   I will include some from the Public Art Coordinator’s perspective at the bottom of this e-mail.

All of these links are for .pdfs.  Let me know if you want these documents in Word so you can amend them for your program.

Note:  Our Traffic Signal Boxes were being upgraded to add Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) units to the side.  So, our templates have that unit.

Here is a link to a video we created about how to paint the TSBs when using Golden Artists Paint (we used a different clear coating process is different for spray painted TSBs)…  I hope you enjoy it.

Do’s and Don’ts for Public Art Coordinators Hosting Traffic Signal Box Public Art Programs

- Do have a plan for cleaning the TSBs.  They are out where there’s no water.  We purchased 2 gallon sprayers for that purpose.

- Do partner with your Traffic Signals Division for permission and locations.  Make sure you know which TSBs are being updated so you do go put art out on one to find out they are replacing it or adding a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply Unit) to the box.

- Do partner with a great vinyl wrap shop.  They produced our templates for us.

- Do be prepared to provide some supplies for the artists, especially those traveling from afar.

- We opted to offer the artists the chance for us to purchase and mix the isolation coat and clear coat supplies.  That worked out great!  We could be sure the mixes were correct.  That gave me a huge peace of mind.

- If your TSBs are tall (ours are) do provide a ladder and have a lock and chain to connect it to a pole nearby.

- Do produce a video announcing your project to prospective artists and post it on social media.  Our post received more than 190k views!

- Do write your call in such a way as to encourage emerging artists.  We had 161 entries and a wonderful assortment of winners including a 14 year old student (beautiful artwork!) and an 81 year old photographer.  Our community loved it.  We got funded to do 20 more this spring.

Best of luck to you!

Subject: "Outside the Box" Traffic Signal Box Art Wraps

HI All,

I’m working on an “Outside the Box” Call to Artists to commission Artists to create work that will be reproduced and printed onto adhesive 3M vinyl, then installed onto nearly 30 traffic signal boxes within three cities.

Administrators, if you have sample Call to Artists, Contracts, and/or suggested do’s and don’ts, I appreciate you sharing.

Artists commissioned to create work for traffic signal boxes, I hope to hear from you with suggested do’s and don’ts- thank you!
