Elayna:

Here in Huntington, NY - a suburban Long Island municipality with a population of over 200,000 - we've completed 26 Signal Box projects since our first 5 in 2015, and just commissioned another 11 in August.  We offer artists the choice of either direct painting on the box or providing the digital design files for a vinyl wrap that is printed and installed by a vendor selected by the municipality (who usually gives a volume discount for being able to print and install several projects at the same time).  We provide a $1,000 design fee for each project, with an additional $600 budgeted for fabrication and installation. This fabrication/installation amount goes directly to those artists who elect direct painting, and is a rough budget for vinyl wrap projects (which varies from vendor to vendor).  Vinyl wrap is by far the preferred medium, but we have had two artists who elected to use more traditional direct painting.  We require vinyl wrap artists to be responsible for taking precise measurements of their assigned signal cabinet as we've found that the cabinets dimensions vary considerably even within the same governmental jurisdiction (we have three - municipal, county, and state) and then provide digital files in accordance with guidelines provided by the selected vinyl wrap vendor.  Attached is a copy of the most recent RFP for the round of projects selected in August.  The RFP has a link to the Public Art Inventory webpage for the first 25 projects.

Sadly, the 11 projects commissioned in August - if they actually manage to get finished - may be the last ones for Huntington.  My position as Director of the Division of Cultural Affairs (a one person municipal division) was eliminated by the municipal Board in August and the 2019 Preliminary Operating Budget released in September also proposes elimination of all funding for public art.

HI All,

I’m working on an “Outside the Box” Call to Artists to commission Artists to create work that will be reproduced and printed onto adhesive 3M vinyl, then installed onto nearly 30 traffic signal boxes within three cities.

Administrators, if you have sample Call to Artists, Contracts, and/or suggested do’s and don’ts, I appreciate you sharing.

Artists commissioned to create work for traffic signal boxes, I hope to hear from you with suggested do’s and don’ts- thank you!
