Beth, Little Rock has several special crosswalks. I requested accident data from the Little Rock city hall representative for the arts:

Re: accident data.  That information is difficult to get since the reporting method was changed a few years ago.  In addition, since two of the three are relatively new, and since there has been so much construction in the area (and subsequent detours), it would be hard to quantify the information even if it were available.

Also, those crosswalks were installed on special sections of the street that have been redesigned with traffic calming devices to deliberately slow traffic as well as encourage pedestrian usage.  (For instance turning on to the street can cause the car to slow significantly in order to navigate bumped out curbs.)

Public Works acknowledges that these designs do not necessarily meet MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) standards for pedestrian crossing markings. HOWEVER that is allowable because those are at signalized intersections in a downtown setting, so drivers should be looking for pedestrians.  The City would not put them at non-signalized intersections or on heavier volume streets.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Unique crosswalks / rainbow crosswalks?

We’ve had repeated requests to do one or more rainbow crosswalks here in Santa Cruz and I LOVE the idea but our Public Works says NO – “Standards are great for several reasons, mostly to do with universal understandability, split-second decisions, and liability.”

Does anyone know if there is data showing that such crosswalks do NOT have any higher rates of accidents?

Any other resources?

Thanks,
