Lexington, KY's rainbow crosswalks remain after a request was received a year ago by the administrator for the KY division of the Federal Highway Administration to remove them for noncompliance with approved crosswalk measures. The city elected to research possible safety issues. Bellevue, KY proposed in September painting a crosswalk in shades of blue, but concerns were raised because of the response Lexington received, and the city attorney was asked to look into the legal aspects of the issue. We’ve had repeated requests to do one or more rainbow crosswalks here in Santa Cruz and I LOVE the idea but our Public Works says NO – “Standards are great for several reasons, mostly to do with universal understandability, split-second decisions, and liability.”

Does anyone know if there is data showing that such crosswalks do NOT have any higher rates of accidents?

Any other resources?

Thanks,
