Hi Beth
We have had rainbow crosswalks installed at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and N San Vicente Blvd since 2012. I am not sure if we have ever released a report with data demonstrating that the crosswalks
are safer.
Click here for lots of links to news items about our rainbow crosswalks. Happy to put you in touch with our Public Works Department if you like.
We have a heightened awareness and demand for pedestrian safety and our Communications Department has implemented a
creative psa campaign.
Thank you!

Subject: Unique crosswalks / rainbow crosswalks?
We’ve had repeated requests to do one or more rainbow crosswalks here in Santa Cruz and I LOVE the idea but our Public Works says NO – “Standards are great for several reasons, mostly to do with universal
understandability, split-second decisions, and liability.”
Does anyone know if there is data showing that such crosswalks do NOT have any higher rates of accidents?
Any other resources?
Thanks,
Beth
