1) What measures have percent-for-art programs taken to increase the number of artists-of-color that apply for and are awarded commissions?
2) Commissions completed by artists-of-color that I could include in my book.

Hi Lynn, here are links to 3 Kansas City-based artists of color who work in public art.
Michael Toombs: http://kcstudio.org/kansas-city-artist-michael-toombs-spearheads-new-brown-v-board-of-education-mural-in-topeka/
Sonié Joi Thompson-Ruffin: https://www.codaworx.com/project/kansas-city-police-department-leon-mercer-jordan-campus-east-patrol-division-amp-regional-crime-lab-kansas-city-missouri-police-department
Phil Shafer: https://sikestyle.myportfolio.com/
Kansas City is also fortunate to have hosted a large festival called Open Spaces recently. The works were located on public property and many of the participants were artists of color. You can learn more about the Open Spaces artists
at https://openspaceskc.com/exhibition/
Good luck with the project!

I'm writing two new chapters for the second edition of The Artist's Guide to Public Art. One is in response to the question I get asked most often by artists which is how they can make the leap from a studio practice to being qualified
for public art commissions.
I know that many of you have made efforts to lower the threshold to entry by creating mentorships, opportunities for artists without commission experience, matching them with fabricators, and technical assistance for local artists.
I will certainly tell artists to look for these opportunities to help them get a leg up.
I also want to include first-hand examples of artists who have gotten their first public art commission and how they did it. Can any of you think of artists who stand out in your memory who made this leap? If so, I will follow
up with them and include their story in the book.
Thank you,
Lynn

Lynn,
This is a good letter from Val Britton we have used as an example in our workshops. I like it because it addresses 1)what her work is about; 2) how her practice might resonate with the site (SFO) 3) Relevant past experience 4)As
an artist, Val works in paper collage and water color. Her letter addresses how she might translate this work into an appropriate permanent material. However, now that I look at it again, I think it is way too long. If I were advising her, I would say the
letter should be maybe half that link. Remember, no one reads anymore. I advise artists to get to the point—quickly. In our program, the panel usually does not see these letters. They are useful for the staff to further condense and summarize in presenting
the artist’s work to the panel.

Subject: Wanted: Example of RFQ with outstanding letter of interest
In the first edition of The Artist's Guide to Public Art, I published a full RFQ and the corresponding letter of interest from the artist who went on to win the project, thanks to Jennifer Riddell and Vicki Scuri for their permission.
I would like to update the second edition of the book with a recent example. If any of you can think of an outstanding letter of interest you've received this year, please let me know and I'll see if I can get permission from the
artist to reproduce it in the book, along with the RFQ it was in response to.
